Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about MossDocs, approval workflows, version control, and AI integrations.

What is MossDocs?

MossDocs is a collaborative markdown editor with git-backed version control and approval workflows. Unlike traditional document editors, MossDocs gives you full version history, branching capabilities, and approval workflows built specifically for teams that need compliance, audit trails, and AI integrations. Every document is backed by Git, providing enterprise-grade version control without the complexity.

Who should use MossDocs?

MossDocs is perfect for compliance and legal teams managing policies with approval workflows, engineering teams documenting APIs and technical specs, policy managers requiring multi-step approvals, and client-facing teams creating professional deliverables. Anyone who needs more than a simple text editor—approval workflows, version control, and AI automation—will benefit from MossDocs.

How much does MossDocs cost?

MossDocs offers three plans: FREE (forever free with up to 5 team members, unlimited documents, full API/MCP access), TEAM ($8/member/month with unlimited members, 90-day version history, and advanced permissions), and ENTERPRISE (custom pricing with unlimited history, SSO/SAML, and dedicated support). All plans include full API access and MCP server integration.

How does MossDocs compare to Google Docs or Notion?

MossDocs is purpose-built for technical and policy documentation. Unlike Google Docs, MossDocs provides true git-backed version control (not just edit history), approval workflows for compliance, and full API access for automation. Compared to Notion, MossDocs focuses specifically on document workflows with approval processes rather than project management, making it simpler and faster for teams that need version-controlled documentation with review processes.

Can I use MossDocs with AI assistants like Claude or ChatGPT?

Yes! MossDocs includes an MCP server for Claude Desktop integration, letting you control documents with natural language (create, edit, search, manage workspaces). For ChatGPT and other AI tools, use our GraphQL API to automate document workflows, create custom integrations, and build AI-powered automation. Full API access is included on all plans, including the free tier.

What is the approval workflow feature?

MossDocs's approval workflows let you create documents that require review and approval before publication. Set up reviewers, track approval status, and maintain complete audit trails. Perfect for compliance documentation, policy changes, legal contracts, and any content requiring stakeholder sign-off. All approvals are tracked in Git history for complete accountability.

How does version control work in MossDocs?

Every MossDocs document is backed by a Git repository, giving you professional version control without learning Git commands. Every change creates a commit with full history, diffs, and the ability to revert to any previous version. You get branching, merging, and complete audit trails automatically. It's the power of Git with a beautiful, user-friendly interface.

Is MossDocs secure and compliant?

Yes. MossDocs provides git-backed audit trails for compliance requirements, approval workflows for regulatory documentation, role-based access control for security, and enterprise features like SSO/SAML (Enterprise plan). All changes are tracked with complete history, providing the accountability needed for compliance, legal, and regulated industries. Your data is secure and fully traceable.

How do I get started with MossDocs?

Getting started is simple: (1) Sign up for a free account—no credit card required, (2) Create your first workspace for your team, (3) Start creating documents in markdown, (4) Invite team members and set up permissions, (5) Optionally configure approval workflows and AI integrations. You can be up and running in minutes with unlimited documents on the free plan.

What integrations are available?

MossDocs offers comprehensive integration options: MCP server for Claude Desktop (control MossDocs with natural language), GraphQL API for custom integrations and automation, REST and tRPC APIs for flexibility, and webhook support for real-time notifications. All API access is included on every plan, including the free tier. Build custom integrations, automate workflows, and connect MossDocs to your existing tools.

Can I stay on the FREE plan forever?

Absolutely! The FREE plan is truly free forever with no time limits. You get unlimited documents, full editing features, git-backed version control, full API and MCP access, and can collaborate with up to 5 team members. We believe in generous free tiers that let individuals and small teams get real work done without hitting paywalls.

What happens when I hit the 5-member limit on the FREE plan?

When your workspace reaches 5 members, you won't be able to invite additional people until you upgrade to the TEAM plan. Existing members keep full access—no one loses their work or permissions. Pending invitations will show a clear upgrade prompt. You can also create multiple FREE workspaces if you need to separate teams.

Does MossDocs support real-time collaboration like Google Docs?

Yes! MossDocs includes Google Docs-style real-time collaborative editing. Multiple users can edit the same document simultaneously, see each other's changes instantly, and view live cursor positions. Changes are merged automatically with conflict-free CRDTs (no "last save wins"). You'll see a presence bar showing who else is editing, with colored cursors for each participant. AI agents can even join as participants. All collaboration features are included on every plan.

What are webhooks and how do they work?

Webhooks let MossDocs notify your external systems when document events happen (created, updated, deleted, approved, etc.). Set up webhook URLs in Settings → Webhooks, choose which events to subscribe to, and MossDocs will send HMAC-signed HTTP POST requests to your endpoint in real-time. Perfect for integrating MossDocs with Slack, triggering automation workflows, syncing with external systems, or notifying AI agents. Webhooks are included on all plans.
